Now, I haven't done any real scupting in a very long time... so I thought it was high time to try my hand at it once more. With my 50% off coupon for Michaels in hand, I bought a three pound box of Sculpey to begin a project I had in mind for this year's Easter table.
I started out by creating a bunny's head on a wooden skewer and two paws molded over the edge of a 1" clay pot. That metal tool is a nut cracker pick - strangely, it's my favorite sculpting tool!
To harden the clay, it only takes mere seconds of dipping it into boiling water. I prefer this method to oven baking as I can use tongs to protect my hands and prevent damage to the soft clay by keeping it from hitting the bottom of the pot.
After drying, I used a variety of acrylic paints and added black eyes by colouring self-stick pearls with a Copic marker. The E-6000 glue makes sure the eyes stay in their sockets.
I stuffed the tiny pot with some real moss, glued the paws to the edge and then created a hole in the moss using a metal pick to insert the bunny's head.
I was going to wrap Easter-coloured ribbon around the pot, but I think I like the lace instead.
Yay! All done! Now I just have to make another five...
Each one will be different; but you'll have to wait until Easter before I show them all done and gracing each place at our dinner table.

You are a gifted and brilliant artist!! WOW!
ReplyDeleteAw, JoJo you are too kind! Thank you! It was a fun fast project; now that the first one is done, I'll use it as kind of a template for the others; should make it even quicker to do. Thanks for coming by!
ReplyDeleteWow! Your bunny is great! And, I had no idea you could dip the clay into boiling water instead of putting it into the oven. That's awesome! I didn't know you could paint it either. You've made me want to buy some of that clay to do some sculpting. I have a bunch of Fimo (sp?) type clay. I wonder if it's the same thing? I've made tiny little critters but never tried anything much bigger than a an inch or two. Looks like a lot of fun. You're very talented!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I think Fimo is the same; but I have always used Sculpey. I hope you have as much fun as I did!
DeleteMaureen,
ReplyDeleteJust darling!! Love them!!
Thanks so much for stopping by!!
Hugs,
Debbie

ReplyDeleteOh thanks Renia... you're too kind!
DeleteHow precious!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea you could "boil" sculpey- I just used sculpey in a recent post-wish I had seen this earlier as a few times I have overcooked it -
This is just adorable- can't wait to see more!
Cheers!
Thanks Christina! Yes, I learned the boil method when I was making custom toys... you couldn't place a plastic toy in an oven, so this was the method of choice. I have also used my heat gun (embossing tool) on small parts and it too cooks the clay perfectly and quickly! (I used this on a picture frame repair as I didn't want to dip the wooden frame in water).
DeleteWow, you are a true artist! That is fantastic! I had no idea you could harden the clay in boiling water...Who knew!

Thank you Carol! Yes, I find boiling is better than oven baking - no fear of fires or over-heating the clay.
DeleteYou, m'lady, are amazing. How cute!!

DeleteHi Maureen,
ReplyDeleteYour sculpted bunny is so adorable! I'm glad you decided to go with the lace around the pot. Doesn't it feel great to get crafy again?
Thank you Donna! It DOES feel great!
DeleteOh my gosh....this is darling. I would be doing the Ceekay squeal if I had one of those at my place setting...what a precious gift!
ReplyDeleteHa! Thank you Ceekay! My family really liked them, and they got to take their own bunny home afterward.
